Rhode Island governor backtracks on Narragansett gaming idea

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

After saying he was open to the idea of a Narragansett Tribe casino, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) said he wants the state to study all of its gaming options.

The tribe is floating a plan to buy the Twin River Casino, a slot machine facility, and convert it into a full-fledged casino. Chafee initially appeared receptive to the idea but later said the state might consider an "independent analysis of a full spectrum of gaming options."

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas will meet with Chafee today to discuss gaming.
